Follow along as it reads.

The sentence being read is highlighted and set large on a fixed reading line, with the spoken word marked inside it. Tap any sentence and it reads on from there.

Fig. 1 · Reader

The sentence stays where your eyes are.

The text moves up beneath a fixed reading line, one sentence at a time, with the spoken word marked inside it. In the bar below: play, pause and skip, then the voice, the language and, in the app, the speed.

How it works2
  1. Press play.

Open a file or paste text, or pick a free book in the app. Choose a voice and the language of the text, then press play.

  2. Watch the reading line.

The spoken sentence lights up, the current word marked inside it, and holds its place. The text moves up beneath it.

  3. Tap to jump.

Tap any sentence and reading starts again from there. The skip buttons go one sentence back or forward.

Notes3

On the page

Always know where the voice is.

Listening is easier when you can see where you are. The reader highlights the sentence being spoken, marks the word the voice is on, and keeps that sentence on the same line of the screen, set large, while the text scrolls up beneath it. The sentences around it stay in view, dimmed, so you keep the thread without searching for it.

That helps in a few ways. You can look away, glance back and find your place at once. You can read a paper or a contract along with the voice and stop on the line you want to check. And if you are learning a language, you see how each sentence is written while you hear it.

When you miss something, tap the sentence. The voice starts again from the beginning of it. The skip buttons do the same one sentence at a time, which is handy for a line you want to hear twice. In a PDF you can tap straight onto the page.

If you scroll away to look at another part of the text, the reader leaves you alone. Five seconds after you stop scrolling, it brings the reading line back to the voice.

Voice, language and speed sit in the bar under the text. On the web, choose the voice and language before you press play; to change them, stop, pick again and play. In the app you can change them while it reads, and the current sentence starts again with the new setting. The app also remembers the page and sentence where you stopped and picks up there next time.

One thing to know about the web reader: the first time you press play, your browser downloads the voices once, about 100 MB, so Wi‑Fi helps. After that they load in a second. A browser that cannot run them reads with your device’s built-in voice instead.

Questions5
Can I see the text while it is read aloud?

Yes. The text stays on screen the whole time, and the sentence being read is highlighted, with the spoken word marked inside it, and held on a fixed reading line, so it never scrolls out of view.

How do I go back to a sentence I missed?

Tap it, and the voice reads on from the start of that sentence. Or press the back button to go one sentence back.

Can I change the reading speed?

In the app, yes: 0.75×, 1×, 1.25×, 1.5× or 1.75×, and the change applies from the current sentence. The web reader reads at the voice’s normal speed.

Why does the first play take a moment on the web?

Your browser downloads the voices the first time, about 100 MB. They are kept, so after that they load in a second.
