Every language, all ten voices
Fig. 1 · Languages

One reader, seven scripts.

The language menu lists all 31 by their own names. The reader plays a sample in Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic, Devanagari, Japanese and Korean script, with the sentence being read highlighted.

How it works2
  1. Open your text

Open a book or document, from PDF to EPUB, or paste text. In the app, you can also pick a free book from the library.

  2. Set its language

In the browser, pick it from the language menu. The app sets it for you when you import a file, and you can change it.

  3. Press play

Any of the ten voices reads it in that language, and the sentence it is on stays highlighted.

Notes3

On languages

What the language changes.

The language setting tells the voice how to pronounce what it reads. The same ten voices speak all 31 languages, so you can keep the voice you like when you go from an English paper to a Russian novel. Each language is read in its own script: Русский in Cyrillic, Ελληνικά in Greek, العربية, हिन्दी, 日本語 and 한국어 in theirs.

In the browser, you choose the language from the menu next to the voice. It starts on the language of the page you are on, so you only touch it for a text in another language. The app sets it for you: when you import a file, it looks at the text and picks the language. If the text is too short to tell, it uses the default language from Settings. You can change it for each document in the reader.

Left as digits, numbers can get lost in many languages, so SpeakCove writes them out as words before the voice sees them. In German, “3” becomes “drei”, and a date like “19.10.2026” becomes “neunzehn Oktober zweitausendsechsundzwanzig”, with that language’s month names. Numbers longer than nine digits are read one digit at a time, since they are usually account numbers or IDs. English is the exception: the voice handles English numbers, prices and years itself.

The language matters for scanned pages too. In the browser, a scanned PDF is recognized in the language you picked, and if you change the language afterwards, the pages are recognized again. Set it before you open a scan and you skip that second pass.

One limit is worth knowing. A text is read in one language from start to finish, so a French line inside a Russian novel gets Russian pronunciation. Languages outside the 31 are not covered. The app has an Other Language setting for them, but the voices were not made for those languages.

Questions5
Does SpeakCove detect the language automatically?

In the app, yes: it sets the language when you import a file, and you can change it in the reader. In the browser you pick it from the language menu, which starts on the language of the page.

Can it read Japanese, Korean, Arabic or Hindi?

Yes. All four are among the 31 languages and are read from their own script, with any of the ten voices. The sentence being read is highlighted the same way as in English.

How does it read numbers and dates?

It writes them out as words in the reading language first, so 19.10.2026 in German is read as “neunzehn Oktober zweitausendsechsundzwanzig”. Numbers longer than nine digits are read one digit at a time.

My language is not on the list. Can it still read it?

The voices speak these 31 languages; Chinese, for example, is not one of them. The app has an Other Language setting as a fallback, but the voices were not made for other languages.
