You can't open a PDF on the car's screen with CarPlay. It is built for driving, so it shows lists and playback controls, not pages of text. What it can do is play audio: a text-to-speech app on your iPhone reads the PDF, ebook or report aloud through the car's speakers, and you control it from the car.

This guide shows how to do that with SpeakCove, the app we make, including what the car's screen shows and what it doesn't. Other apps that read documents in CarPlay are listed at the end, with prices as of October 2026.

A word on safety: SpeakCove in the car is audio only, and nothing on the car's screen needs reading while you drive. Do the setup on your phone first, pick what to hear before you pull out or while you're parked, and use the steering-wheel buttons for the rest. Follow your local laws on using a phone in the car.

Prerequisites

  • An iPhone with iOS 26 or later
  • A car or stereo with CarPlay, wired or wireless
  • SpeakCove from the App Store (free) with Premium, a one-time $14.99 purchase that includes CarPlay. The app calls it Premium Lifetime
  • Your documents as DRM-free files: PDF, EPUB, MOBI, AZW3, DOCX, FB2, CBZ, RTF, TXT or HTML, or a scan of a printed page

How to Listen with SpeakCove

  1. 1Unlock Premium on your phone

CarPlay is part of SpeakCove Premium, a one-time $14.99 purchase with no subscription. Buy it in the app on your iPhone. Without it, SpeakCove's car screen shows a single locked row, "CarPlay requires Premium Lifetime". If you unlock it while connected, the car switches to your library on its own, without unplugging.

  2. 2Add your PDFs and ebooks

In the app, tap + > Import File, or share a file to SpeakCove from Files or Mail. Tap + > Scan Document for a printed page, or pick a free public-domain book in the app. A document shows up on the car's screen once the app has finished importing it, so let that finish on the phone.

  3. 3Set the voice, language and speed

Open a document on the phone and choose a voice and a speed. The car uses the same settings, and its screen has no controls to change them.

  4. 4Connect to CarPlay

Plug in your iPhone, or connect wirelessly if your car supports it, and open SpeakCove on the car's screen. It opens on your library: what you're listening to at the top, then Continue Listening (the 5 documents you started most recently), then All Documents. The button at the top sorts the list A to Z.

  5. 5Tap a document and listen

Tap a title and it reads aloud through the car's speakers, from where you left off. The Now Playing screen has play, pause, and one sentence back or forward. On cars that have them, the previous and next buttons on the steering wheel also skip by sentence.

  6. 6Pick it up again later

SpeakCove saves your place after every sentence. The next time you connect, the document is at or near the top of the list and starts where you stopped. On the phone, it opens at the same sentence. The voices run on the iPhone, so a tunnel or a stretch without signal doesn't stop the reading.

Alternative Methods

  1. Speech Central

A document reader with CarPlay support, per its App Store listing. It reads PDF (including scans), EPUB, Word, PowerPoint, HTML and more, and Pro is $9.99 one-time in the US App Store (as of October 2026).

  2. ElevenReader

ElevenReader added CarPlay in version 1.11.36 in September 2026, per its App Store release notes. In the car you can browse your recent items and your library, and control playback.

  3. Peech

Peech added CarPlay in version 8.4.0 in December 2025 and rebuilt it in version 11.0.0 in September 2026, per its App Store release notes. In the car you can browse your library and pick up where you left off.

  4. Voxium

A newer reader for PDF, EPUB and Word files with CarPlay playback, per its App Store listing (version 2.0.0, September 2026). Its free on-device voice works offline, and Pro is $4.99 one-time in the US App Store (as of October 2026).

  5. Speechify

Speechify's own guide to listening to PDFs says you can play them over CarPlay. Its App Store listing doesn't mention a CarPlay app, so expect the car's Now Playing screen with play, pause and skip rather than your library. Its free plan has 10 basic voices at up to 1.5x.

  6. Audible and Apple Books

Both play audiobooks in CarPlay. Audible's App Store listing mentions CarPlay, and Apple's Audiobooks app appears on the CarPlay screen for the audiobooks on your iPhone.

  7. Speak Screen and Siri

iPhone's Speak Screen reads whatever is on the phone's screen. Turn it on in Settings > Accessibility > Read & Speak, then swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen, or ask Siri to "Speak screen".

Frequently Asked Questions

Can CarPlay open PDFs?
Not on the car's screen. CarPlay shows lists and playback controls, not pages of text. To get through a PDF in the car, use an app that reads it aloud, like SpeakCove, and control it from the car's screen or the steering wheel.
Is CarPlay free in SpeakCove?
No. CarPlay is part of SpeakCove Premium, a one-time $14.99 purchase with no subscription, which also adds the other 8 voices and listening with the screen locked. The free app reads with 2 voices while it is open on the phone's screen.
Can I change the voice or speed from the car?
Not in SpeakCove. Set them in the app on your phone before you drive, and the car uses them. On the car's screen you get play, pause, and one sentence back or forward.
Why doesn't my document show up on the car's screen?
It may still be importing: a new file appears once the app has finished with it. CarPlay also lists only 25 documents, the most recent first. Try the A to Z button at the top, or start the document on the phone before you drive, and it appears at the top as Now Playing.
Does it work without mobile signal?
Yes. SpeakCove's voices run on the iPhone, so a tunnel or a rural road without signal doesn't stop the reading. Downloading a free book or syncing with iCloud needs a connection, so do that before you leave.
Is listening to documents while driving safe?
Treat it like a podcast. Pick what to hear before you pull out or while you're parked, use the steering-wheel buttons or the car's screen for play and pause, and don't handle your phone while driving. If a dense document needs your full attention, save it for later.
