Does Audible Work in Airplane Mode? How to Listen to Books on a Plane

Audible plays in airplane mode only what you downloaded before the flight. Here is what works offline in Audible, Libby and the main text-to-speech apps, and how to listen to your own PDFs and ebooks on a plane.

Yes, Audible works in airplane mode, but only for titles you downloaded to your phone before you went offline: Audible's help center says that once a title is done downloading, you can listen offline, and anything you haven't downloaded needs a connection. Audible Plus Catalog titles also lock if your membership is paused or cancelled, while titles you bought stay in your library (Audible Help, checked October 2026).

The same rule holds for Libby and most other audiobook and text-to-speech apps: download first, then fly. Your AirPods keep working, because airplane mode turns off every radio except Bluetooth. What no audiobook app can do is read your own PDFs, ebooks and work documents. For those you need a text-to-speech app whose voices run on the phone, such as SpeakCove. How to Listen with SpeakCove

  1. 1Download your Audible titles

    In the Audible app, go to Library > All Titles, open the ••• menu on a title (or press and hold it) and tap Download. Audible downloads one title at a time and has no bulk download, so start the downloads at home, on Wi-Fi.

  2. 2Check that your Libby loans are on the phone

    By default, the Libby app downloads borrowed books and audiobooks when you are on Wi-Fi. A loan that shows a cloud icon is not on the device and needs internet to play. You can change what Libby downloads under Menu > Downloads: Everything, Titles Under a size, or Nothing.

  3. 3Add your own documents to SpeakCove

    Open SpeakCove and tap + > Import File to add PDFs, EPUBs, MOBI, DOCX or any of its 10 formats from Files or iCloud Drive, or share them from Mail. Get free Project Gutenberg books or open-access papers from Explore while you are still online. The voices are part of the app, so there is no voice pack to download.

  4. 4Test everything in airplane mode at home

    Turn on airplane mode, then play a few seconds of each audiobook and document you plan to hear. If something doesn't play, it isn't on the phone yet: turn airplane mode off and download it again.

  5. 5Keep Bluetooth on for your headphones

    Apple says airplane mode turns off all radios except Bluetooth, so AirPods stay connected. One catch: if you switched Bluetooth off during an earlier flight while in airplane mode, the iPhone remembers and turns Bluetooth off again. Turn it back on in Control Center.

  6. 6Listen during the flight

    Audible and Libby play downloaded titles as usual. In SpeakCove, open any document in your library and press play: speech is generated on the iPhone with the same voices you use online, and speed (0.75x to 1.75x), the sleep timer, sentence highlighting and your saved place all work offline.

Alternative Methods

  1. Speechify

    Speechify added on-device voices to its iOS app in December 2025, so documents can be read aloud without internet.

  2. ElevenReader

    ElevenReader reads documents with ElevenLabs' cloud voices, which need a connection to generate speech.

  3. iPhone Speak Screen

    Speak Screen is built into iOS and uses voices stored on the iPhone. Turn it on in Settings > Accessibility > Read & Speak, then swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen in any document viewer.
