Buying Guide

1. Why You're Leaving Speechify

If it's the price, look at one-time apps, SpeakCove's free web reader or Apple's built-in Speak Screen. If you love the voices but not the bill, ElevenReader's Ultra plan costs $99 a year against Speechify's $139.

2. Price Model

Speechify Premium is $139 a year on its website. Alternatives here range from free (Apple) and one-time unlocks ($9.99 to $29.99) to yearly plans of up to $159.

3. Offline Listening and Privacy

Speechify has had on-device voices on iOS since December 2025, so offline listening alone is no reason to switch. Among the alternatives, apps with on-device voices keep reading without a connection and don't send your text to a speech server. Cloud-voice apps sound more expressive but need internet or paid downloads.

4. Formats and Devices

Speechify runs on phone and desktop with a synced library. NaturalReader and ElevenReader pair their apps with web readers that sync too. SpeakCove's free web reader runs in Chrome, Edge or Safari but doesn't sync with the app. If you only listen on iPhone or iPad, format support matters more.

5. Free Version Limits

Free plans limit different things: hours per month, articles per day, voices, speed, or background playback. Pick the limit you'll notice least.

The Verdict

• One-time purchase, no subscription

Free to start with 2 voices and every format. $14.99 once unlocks all 10 voices, background playback and CarPlay. No subscription, ever.

• Listen in the car with CarPlay

Your documents on your car's screen and speakers, with CarPlay in Premium.

• Works offline, fully on-device

Your documents never leave your device. The app has no analytics and no ads, and reading and voices work in airplane mode.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best free alternative to Speechify?

SpeakCove's web reader at speakcove.com: all 10 voices are free in the browser, with no sign-up and no length limit, and your text isn't uploaded. The neural voices need WebGPU (current Chrome, Edge or Safari), and the first play downloads them once, about 100 MB. On iPhone, Apple's Speak Screen is free and built in (Settings > Accessibility > Read & Speak), SpeakCove's free app has no time limit but 2 voices, and ElevenReader gives 10 free hours a month of AI voices.

What are some apps like Speechify?

Apps that read text and documents aloud like Speechify include ElevenReader, NaturalReader, Voice Dream, Speech Central, PageEcho and SpeakCove, all on iPhone as of October 2026. NaturalReader, ElevenReader and SpeakCove also run in a web browser; SpeakCove's web reader is free with all 10 voices and needs no sign-up. Apple's Speak Screen is built into every iPhone.

Is there a Speechify alternative without a subscription?

Yes. SpeakCove Premium is $14.99 one-time, Speech Central Pro is $9.99 one-time, and PageEcho offers a $29.99 lifetime unlock, all in the US App Store as of October 2026. All three run on iPhone.

How much does Speechify cost in 2026?

As of October 24, 2026, Speechify's free plan has 10 basic voices, which Speechify itself calls robotic sounding, and speeds up to 1.5x. Premium costs $29 a month or $139 a year on speechify.com. In the US App Store, its in-app purchases run from $11.99 to $159.99, and Apple doesn't name every billing period.

Which Speechify alternative has the most natural voices?

ElevenReader, built on ElevenLabs voice technology, offers over 1,000 AI voices. They are generated in the cloud, so offline listening needs its Ultra plan at $11 a month or $99 a year.

Which Speechify alternatives work offline?

Speechify itself has had on-device voices on iOS since December 2025, so you don't need to switch for offline listening. Among the alternatives, SpeakCove, Voice Dream, Speech Central and PageEcho list voices that run on the phone, so they keep reading in airplane mode. ElevenReader and NaturalReader offer offline listening through downloads.

Is there a Speechify alternative for both phone and computer?

NaturalReader and ElevenReader both pair their iPhone apps with web readers that sync your library. SpeakCove has a free web reader at speakcove.com with all 10 voices and no sign-up, plus the iPhone and iPad app with iCloud sync between the two. The web reader has no account, so it doesn't share a library with the app.
