SpeakCove is made by the author of this page. We aim to be fair, but weigh our view accordingly. How we review

NaturalReader's free plan caps its AI voices at 20,000 characters a day with Lite voices and 4,000 with Plus voices as of October 2026, so the best free NaturalReader alternative is one without a daily cap. Only its basic system voices read without a limit. By our estimate, the caps come to about 20 minutes and 4 minutes of listening at normal speed. Paid personal plans cost $79 to $159 a year on its website.

If you want natural voices in the browser without a daily cap, we pick SpeakCove: its web reader has all 10 voices free, with no sign-up and no length limit, and its iPhone and iPad app is $14.99 once. For the largest choice of AI voices, try ElevenReader or Speechify. On a Windows PC, Edge's Read aloud is already there. On iPhone, Apple's Speak Screen is free and built in. We checked official pricing pages, help articles and App Store listings as of October 2026. We make SpeakCove, so we've listed its limits too.

Buying Guide

  1. Which Limit You Hit

NaturalReader's free plan caps its AI voices per day: 20,000 characters with Lite voices and 4,000 with Plus voices. Converting to MP3 needs a paid plan. If the daily cap is the problem, a reader without one fixes it for free: SpeakCove's web reader, Edge's Read aloud or Apple's Speak Screen. If you need audio files, see below.

  2. Price Model

NaturalReader's website lists Lite at $13.90 a month or $79 a year, Plus at $20.90 or $119, and Pro at $25.90 or $159. In the US App Store, its Premium plan is $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year. The alternatives here range from free (SpeakCove's web reader, Edge, Apple) and one-time unlocks ($9.99 and $14.99) to yearly plans of $79.99 to $139.

  3. Browser, Phone or Both

NaturalReader has a web reader and mobile apps. ElevenReader and Speechify sync your library between their apps and the web. SpeakCove's web reader runs in current Chrome, Edge and Safari, and its app runs on iPhone and iPad, but the two don't share a library. Edge's Read aloud works only in Edge, and Speak Screen only on Apple devices.

  4. Audio Files

NaturalReader's paid plans convert up to 1 million characters a month per voice tier to MP3. SpeakCove doesn't export audio at all. Speech Central's App Store listing says it can export text to audio files. If you need MP3s for another player, check this first.

  5. Offline Listening

SpeakCove's app, Voice Dream and Speech Central run their voices on the phone, so they read in airplane mode. Speechify has had on-device iOS voices since December 2025. ElevenReader needs Ultra for offline downloads, and Edge falls back to a basic set of voices offline. NaturalReader's route to offline listening is MP3 export on a paid plan.

  6. Voices and Languages

NaturalReader lists 200+ AI voices in 90+ languages, and its Plus and Pro plans can clone up to 2 voices. ElevenReader and Speechify list 1,000+ voices. SpeakCove has 10 voices in 31 languages. If you read in a less common language, check the list before you switch.

The Verdict

If NaturalReader's daily cap on AI voices is why you're leaving, start with SpeakCove's free web reader: all 10 voices, no sign-up and no daily limit, in Chrome, Edge or Safari. On iPhone and iPad, its app is free with 2 voices, or $14.99 once for all 10, background playback and CarPlay. For the most AI voices, look at ElevenReader (10 free hours a month, then $99 a year for Ultra) or Speechify ($139 a year for Premium on its website, with 60+ languages and speeds up to 5x). On a Windows PC, Edge's Read aloud costs nothing extra. Stay with NaturalReader if you need MP3 export, voice cloning or 90+ languages.

SpeakCove's web reader at speakcove.com/text-to-speech: all 10 voices are free, with no sign-up and no daily limit, and your file isn't uploaded. The neural voices need WebGPU (current Chrome, Edge or Safari), and the first play downloads them once, about 100 MB. On a Windows PC, Edge's Read aloud is built in. On iPhone, Apple's Speak Screen is free (Settings > Accessibility > Read & Speak), and ElevenReader gives 10 free hours a month of AI voices.
What are NaturalReader's free plan limits?
As of October 2026, NaturalReader's help center lists unlimited listening with its free voices, which it describes as non-AI system voices that depend on your device, operating system and browser. AI voices are capped per day: 20,000 characters with Lite voices and 4,000 shared characters with Plus and cloned voices. The free plan can't convert text to MP3.
How much does NaturalReader cost in 2026?
As of October 2026, NaturalReader's help center lists Lite at $13.90 a month or $79 a year, Plus at $20.90 or $119, and Pro at $25.90 or $159. SpeakCove can't: neither its web reader nor its app exports audio. Speech Central's App Store listing says it can export text to audio files. NaturalReader's paid plans convert up to 1 million characters a month per voice tier to MP3, so if audio files are what you need, it may still be the better fit.
