Lock screen
Lock the phone and it keeps reading, with controls on the lock screen.
Start a book on your iPhone and go on from the same sentence on your iPad. iCloud keeps your library, your place in every book and your voice settings the same on both.
Paused on the iPhone on the way home, playing on the iPad from the sentence where it stopped. The book, its cover and its place came across through iCloud.
Sign in to iCloud with the same Apple Account on your iPhone and your iPad. There is nothing to turn on in SpeakCove.
Import a file, scan pages with the camera or pick a free book. It shows up in the library on the other device, file and all.
SpeakCove saves your place at every sentence. Open the book on the other device, press play, and it reads on from there.
One library, two screens
SpeakCove keeps your library in iCloud. Import a book on your iPhone and it appears on your iPad shortly after, with the file itself, its title, author and cover, and the text recognized from any scanned pages. A free book from the library or a letter you scanned with the camera travels the same way.
Your place goes with the book. As the voice reads, the app saves the page and the sentence it is on,1 so when you open the same book on the other device and press play, it goes on from that sentence, not from the top of the chapter. The voice you chose for that book comes along, and so do three settings: your default voice, your default language and your playback speed.
That suits days that move from room to room. Listen to a chapter on the iPhone on the way home, then carry on with the iPad on the sofa. Or scan a few pages with the phone at your desk and follow them later on the bigger screen.
There is nothing to set up and no SpeakCove account. Sync runs through the private part of your own iCloud account, not through SpeakCove’s servers.2
A few limits are worth knowing. Sync needs a connection on both devices, and a large file takes a while to arrive. Each device remembers on its own which book it played last, so the app opens on that one; the place inside each book is what is shared. Without iCloud everything still works, but the library stays on that one device. And the free web reader is not part of it: it has no account, so there is nothing to sync with.
Yes. Through iCloud it syncs your library, your place in each book down to the sentence, and your default voice, language and speed.
No. Sync uses the iCloud account you are already signed in to, and there is nothing to turn on in the app.
Check that both devices use the same Apple Account, are online, and allow SpeakCove to use iCloud in the Settings app. Large files take longer to arrive.
No. The web reader runs in your browser without an account, so there is nothing to sync. Sync is between the app on your iPhone and iPad.
Install the app on your iPhone and your iPad, sign in to the same iCloud, and your books follow you.
iCloud sync is between iPhone and iPad.
