The Challenge
- Apple Books doesn't offer a dedicated read-aloud mode for ordinary EPUBs. The built-in route is Speak Screen, which reads whatever is on the screen with the iOS system voice.
- Store and library EPUBs often carry DRM, such as Adobe DRM or Apple's FairPlay on Apple Books purchases. Those files only open in the apps they were sold or lent for.
- A 300-page novel is roughly 8 to 10 hours of listening at normal speed. Over that many sessions, a saved place, a sleep timer and a comfortable voice matter more than they do for a short document.
How to Listen with SpeakCove
1Get a DRM-free EPUB

2Import the file

Frequently Asked Questions
- Can SpeakCove read DRM-protected EPUBs?
- No. SpeakCove checks EPUBs for encryption and tells you when a file is protected. Font obfuscation, which some publishers use for embedded fonts, is not DRM, and those books open normally.
- Can I listen to library ebooks?
- Only if the library offers a DRM-free download. Loans through Libby and similar apps are DRM-protected, so they stay in those apps.
- Where can I get free EPUBs?
