DOCX has been Microsoft Word's default format since Word 2007, and Google Docs and Apple Pages both export to it. A .docx file is a ZIP package of XML parts that hold the text, styles, tables, comments, tracked changes and images. Contracts, theses, manuscripts and meeting notes usually travel as DOCX, which is why it is one of the most common files people want read aloud: to proofread a draft, review a report on a walk, or get through course reading on a commute.
The Challenge
- Word's Read Aloud needs Word itself: Office 2019, Office 2021 or Microsoft 365 on a computer, or the Word app on iPhone, where Microsoft says to sign in to a Microsoft 365 account if the option doesn't appear. Word for the web has Immersive Reader instead.
- Drafts carry tracked changes and comments. Depending on the app, you may hear deleted text or miss inserted text, so a clean final copy is easier to listen to.
- Older Word 97-2003 files use the separate binary .doc format, and Pages documents (.pages) are their own format. Neither is a .docx until you save or export it as one.
How to Listen with SpeakCove
1Get a clean .docx copy
Accept or reject tracked changes and delete comments you don't want to hear. From Pages or Google Docs, export the document as Word (.docx). Save an old .doc file as .docx in Word.
2Open it in the free web reader
